Ken Johnson lowers a Van Dorn water sampler into Monterey Bay from the Proteus

bongo trawl - two circular metalic rings for the openings (~ 1m dia)(resembling bongo drums). Mesh ranges from 20µm tp 1mm. Can be deployed vertically or towed horizontally.  If deployed with a mechanical flow meter, the volume of water filtered can be quatified. Good for phytoplankton, zooplankton, invertebrates and large fish.

hydrocast - for collecting water samples for nutrient analysis.

Menzel dazzler cast - for collecting 25L (6.6 gal) water samples to study ultaplankton (<2 µm)

Tucker trawl - rectangular opening using wood or metal. A type of bottom trawl to collect species near the bottom

shipek - used for bottom grab samples of sediments

corer - to collect sediment cores up to 70 cm (~28in). Goes deeper than the more surface 'shipek' sampler, but less volume collected.

otter trawl and dredge - used to collect benthic organisms from the sea floor.
