Gilbert Smith was born to Elizabeth Mayher Smith and Erastus G. Smith on January 6, 1885 in Beloit, Wisconsin. Both parents were born and educated in Massachusetts; Elizabeth graduated from Mt. Holyoke College and Erastus from Amherst College. In Wisconsin, Erastus Smith was a Professor of Chemistry at Beloit College. Gilbert Smith graduated from Beloit in 1907, having concentrated on chemistry and botany. He attended the University of Wisconsin, completing his PhD in 1913 and, during that year, married Miss Helen Pfuderer. For the next decade he remained at the University of Wisconsin, attaining the position of associate professor at the Department of Botany. He was recruited to Stanford University in 1923, and in 1925 became Professor of Botany. Dr. Gilbert Smith came to Hopkins as a professor of botany in 1925. Positioned as faculty on the main campus, Gilbert, first taught his marine botany course at Hopkins in 1925, returning to teach the summer course for the next twenty-five years. Although he published many original articles, Smith is best known for his books, including Freshwater Algae of the United States (1933), Cryptogamic Botany (1938), and Marine Algae of the Monterey Peninsula (1944). With its graceful illustrations and superb descriptions of seaweed form and habitat, Marine Algae of the Monterey Peninsula was, and still is, a landmark achievement. Smith retired in 1950, but remained scientifically active until he died in 1959.
