Frank MacFarland

Frank M. MacFarland received a Bachelor of Science from DePauw University in 1889, a Master of Science from Stanford University in 1893, and a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Wurzburg in 1896. As a Professor of Histology, Frank Mace MacFarland served Stanford University for almost sixty years. In addition, Professor McFarland served as President of the California Academy of Sciences for fourteen years.
Much of MacFarland's research involved the study of marine molluscs, with his particular interests toward gastropods (such as snails, sea slugs, and sea hares). At the time of his passing, Dr. MacFarland was leading authority on the habits and life history of Pacific Coast nudibranchs.
Frank Mace MacFarland participated in thirteen of the twenty-three years regular sessions of the Hopkins Seaside Laboratory. In the position of Assistant to Instructor in the summers of 1892; in the position of Instructor during the summers of 1893, 1894, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1905; in the position of Instructor in Charge during the summers of 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913 and Occupying an Investigators Room during the summer of 1897.
