David Epel received his Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied under Daniel Mazia. He joined Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station in 1965. In 1970, he accepted a position at the University of California San Diego's Scripps Institute of Oceanography. He returned to Hopkins in 1977, where he remained until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2009. Epel's research focused on fertilization and development in the marine environment, often using sea urchin gametes. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, the Cox Medal for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research at Stanford and the Ed Ricketts Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Marine Sciences, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the California Academy of Sciences.

David Epel research program at Hopkins Marine Station explored developmental biology, a field whose progress has depended on the use of eggs and embryos of marine invertebrates. Epel is recognized as one of the foremost students of the process of fertilization, and a number of his discoveries have proved to be applicable to the understanding of fertilization in all kinds of animals. He has contributed to our present views on how sperm cells combine with egg cells and of the biomechanical mechanisms by which eggs, often rather dormant cells, are stimulated to start the program of biomechanical activities which unfolds as the development of the embryo is launched by fertilization. The work of his group was directed toward, the radical changes of the cell membrane and other surface components of the egg at fertilization, the role of ions, especially calcium ions and hydrogen ions, in the activation of the egg and the consequent stimulation of the synthesis of proteins. His contributions have been influential beyond the field of developmental biology. The close analysis of fertilization proves to be a valuable source of information about the ways in which changes of the activities of cells are regulated by membranes and ions.

Another focus of Epel's research explored how embryos handle environmental stress. Marine embryos receive scant parental care; they are essentially orphans whose protective strategies must be unique. How do embryos fend off pathogens before they have immune systems? How do they handle toxins? And how do embryos repair DNA damaged by toxins or UV radiation? Embryo cell cycles are extremely fast; can adequate DNA repair occur between cell divisions?
