While at Hopkins Marine Station, Burnett's research concerned the specialized physiology and behavior of a minute crustacean that lives in the tidepools.
Husband of Nancy Burnett, sister of Julie Packard - director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, had input into the beginnings of the MBA and was a great help in the ecology related classes and research. Son, Jason Burnett, went on to become mayor of Carmel by the Sea.
